Bangladesh, Barisal, Barisal Division. | Portrait of a boy watching the monsoon rain in front of his house made of corrugated aluminium and bamboo at the mouth of the Meghna river next to Bhola island. The house is protected from river erosion by geotextile bags filled with sand. Bhola island is +/- 100 km long with a population of 1.9 million. It is becoming more elongated because of Meghna river erosion. It is only 6 feet (1.8 m) above sea level at its most elevated point. Large portions of the island have already been inundated by sea water and the island is at serious risk of disappearing entirely.

Ukraine, Donbass region, Toretsk, Centralna Mine. A miner at the end of a shift. To get to the changing room and showers he must walk to another building in the snow. It is -10° Celsius outside. Coal Survivors | The mining town of Toretsk sits isolated from the rest of the country in eastern Ukraine. The mines, that once nourished the local economy in this coal-rich Donbas region, have closed one by one since the 1990s. The two that remain are rapidly reducing the number of workers. Since the start of the (ongoing) Donbas conflict in 2014, young people have left due to the proximity of the frontline, just 10 kms away. Most of the city’s residents depend on the coal mines. Centralna Mine, founded in 1860, is the oldest and deepest coal mine (1124 meters) in the region. Its infrastructure is dilapidated and in dire need of repair but the priority of the central government in Kiev is to support its soldiers first. The situation is tense and usually the miners had not been paid for four months other than an advance of 10% of their salary.  Among miners, rumors of closure are rife and Toretsk may soon know the fate of Walbrych, the city in Silesia (Poland) which went bankrupt in the 1990s following the closure of all its mines. On February 22, Russia recognized the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) and the Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR), and two days later, launched an invasion of Ukraine. What is happening in the mines of Toretsk since the Russian attack of February 24, 2022?
Pyongyang, North Korea. | September 10, 2018, thousands of students gather on Kim Il-sung Square near the Grand People’s Study House, Pyongyang’s main library built in classical Korean style, for the final rehearsal of the torchlight procession to be held that evening; part of the on-going celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of North Korea. Each participant is assigned a freshly-painted mark on the ground. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) remains one of the most isolated and secretive nations in the world. Since its creation in 1948, the country has been ruled by three generations of the Kim dynasty descending from the country’s founder Kim Il-sung, followed by his son, Kim Jong-il and currently under the control of his grandson, Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-un. It is a self-reliant socialist society based on an extreme interpretation of the cult of personality and devotion to the current and former leaders, fueled by a large dose of propaganda. The festivities honoring the 70th anniversary of the creation of North Korea on September 9, 1948, include the opening ceremony of the Mass Games at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang. Supreme Leader, Kim Jung-un is in attendance. While the country is generally off limits to foreign media, this event is accessible to the press and tourists alike. Virtually the entire society has been called to service and is focused on the sole objective of showing the world the caliber, merit and talent of North Korea on display in both cultural and military domaines. It is in this favorable, yet highly controlled, context that this story takes place. Visitors are shown only a confined area of Pyongyang; one of modern high-risers in recently constructed districts of the city. Visits to the city’s national monuments are a required portion of the pre-determined, inflexible itinerary.  Chaperoned and surveilled by two official government guides at all times is standard practice for foreign visitors.

Το έργο του έχει τιμηθεί με μερικές από τις σημαντικότερες διακρίσεις της διεθνούς φωτογραφίας, μεταξύ των οποίων 3 βραβεία World Press Photo, 8 βραβεία POYI (Picture of the Year International), 10 Siena Photo Awards, 9 Travel Photographer of the Year, 5 Trieste Photo Awards και 4 Istanbul Photo Awards.
